Last year I discovered something about myself….I uncovered a limiting belief that I had, that was holding me back.
Around 10 months ago I realized that I had an insecurity about my age.
I’ve always looked young for my age and I can remember from around 17, people I didn’t know would think I was a lot younger than I was.
At around 20 whilst studying at University, a lady in a shop asked me if I was on school holidays (she thought I was 17 years old).
To most people this wouldn’t even be an issue, but for me there was obviously a deep rooted insecurity, so these harmless comments would really touch a nerve.
When I left England at 21 to move to Sydney, Australia I started flat sharing with people 7-8 years older than me. I grew up with older siblings and had always got on with people years older than me, so I knew that age had no relation to whether we would get on with them.
But I always had this slight feeling of angst that I would be asked how old I am. I was embarrassed for some reason and I assumed people would judge me and not want to talk to me.
Moving into jobs, this again impacted me as I was afraid to speak up and voice my opinion (even when I knew it was a good one) as I was afraid no one would listen to me because I was ‘too young’.
Last year, when I was 23 years old, I was looking for opportunities online because I knew I was destined for more than just an office job working for someone else.
When I came across the Six Figure Mentors I was excited but that voice inside my head was telling me I was too young to know what I was doing or to succeed.
I had this false belief that to have a successful business you had to have years of experience and vast knowledge.
Luckily, I didn’t listen to the negative thoughts and I made sure I didn’t miss out on this opportunity.
I was able to ignore the voice in my head but some people miss out because they let it take control.
Since getting started online, I have spoken to a lot of people who also fear that their age will be a barrier to success. However, most of these people are on the other end of the spectrum.
There are so many people in their 50s, 60s and even 70s who think they are ‘too old’. They think that they’ve missed the boat and are at a huge disadvantage compared to people half their age.
The reason I’m telling this story is to demonstrate that we all have limiting beliefs. We all have a story in our head about why we will not be successful. But that is all it is…a story that you’ve made up in your head.
I thought I was too young, some think they are too old, others think they aren’t technical enough.
But I’m telling you that none of these things are barriers to your success. And the good news, is that you can absolutely overcome these beliefs and achieve the success you deserve.
Since joining the Six Figure Mentors I have been crushing my limiting beliefs one by one. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved at 24 years old and I know there is no excuse good enough to stop me now.
